API Analyst

Context

The Federal Pensions Service is looking for an experienced API Analyst to strengthen the Integration Team. This team supports the organization in designing, standardizing, managing, and further developing integration solutions and APIs within an integration landscape in which, among others, AXWAY and Fuse are used as ESB technologies. The role has a clear link with application, integration, and technology architecture: the API Analyst translates architectural guidelines into applicable API agreements for the development teams. Additionally, the API Analyst contributes to a composable architecture by helping to define APIs as reusable, well-documented, and decoupled building blocks within the application and integration landscape.

This role is explicitly not an API developer role, but an enabling role: the consultant guides, advises, and supports development teams in the correct and consistent design, documentation, publication, and use of APIs.

Purpose of the Position

As an API Analyst, you are responsible for analyzing, structuring, and documenting API needs within the organization. You support development teams in translating functional and technical requirements into clear API contracts, API specifications, and integration agreements. You contribute to a uniform API approach, increase the quality and reusability of APIs, and help the organization to make integrations more secure, consistent, and manageable. In doing so, you ensure that APIs fit within the principles of a composable architecture, with attention to reusability, loose coupling, clear contracts, standardization, and alignment with architecture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting development teams in analyzing, designing, and documenting APIs.
  • Creating and maintaining API specifications, for example in OpenAPI/Swagger.
  • Monitoring API standards, naming conventions, version management, error handling, security guidelines, and documentation quality.
  • Actively participating in meetings between business analysts, functional analysts, development teams, architects, security, and operational teams.
  • Analyzing existing APIs and integration patterns and formulating proposals for improvement, standardization, and reuse.
  • Supporting API governance, including reviewing API designs and aligning with architectural guidelines.
  • Aligning API designs and integration choices with enterprise and solution architecture, ensuring solutions fit within the prevailing architectural principles and integration standards.
  • Supporting development teams in applying composable architecture principles, so that APIs, services, and integration patterns contribute to a modular, reusable, and manageable application landscape.
  • Contributing to knowledge sharing, documentation, templates, and guidelines for API development within the team and the organization.
  • Contributing to the further professionalization of the Integration Team as an enabling team for the development teams.

Technical Skills and Experience

  • Experience with functional and technical analysis within IT projects or software development.
  • Experience with API analysis, API design, or integration analysis.
  • Good knowledge of REST APIs, API contracts, OpenAPI/Swagger, and JSON.
  • Good knowledge of integration principles, such as synchronous/asynchronous communication, event-driven integration, message queues, or middleware.
  • Knowledge of or experience with ESB environments, preferably AXWAY and Fuse, and insight into the role of APIs within broader integration architectures.
  • Knowledge of composable architecture principles, with insight into how APIs, services, ESB platforms, and integration patterns contribute to a modular, reusable, and manageable application landscape.
  • Experience with API governance, API lifecycle management, version management, documentation, and service reusability.
  • Knowledge of API security, such as OAuth2, OpenID Connect, JWT, certificates, access control, and secure API design.
  • Knowledge of Agile/Scrum and experience collaborating in or with development teams.

Generic Skills

  • Strong analytical skills and a structured approach.
  • Ability to connect with technical and functional stakeholders for consultation.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Support towards knowledge expansion for development teams.
  • Customer- and service-oriented work attitude.
  • Result-oriented and a sense of responsibility.
  • Continuous improvement mentality.
  • Ability to apply standards without losing sight of the pragmatism of project realization.

Please include with your application a presentation or document in which you describe an API or integration environment where you supported inexperienced development teams in analyzing, designing, documenting, or standardizing APIs. Clearly state the role you personally took, how you collaborated with development teams, architects, or other stakeholders, and how the APIs fit within the broader integration and composable architecture.
