Cloud and virtualisation engineer (Engineer G-cloud, M365 and Virtualisation)

General Role

The Cloud & Virtualisation Engineer is part of the team responsible for managing the Windows server environment and the design of the various network components.

The position encompasses architectural tasks as well as implementation, optimization, troubleshooting, and providing advice across the entire infrastructure stack.

Scope of Architectural Management

The engineer is responsible for developing, configuring, integrating, and optimizing, among others:

  • Windows servers with various roles (including file, print, Active Directory, SQL)
  • Collaboration platforms such as Exchange, Teams, Office 365, and SharePoint
  • Database systems (SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, Sybase)
  • Storage infrastructure (NetApp)
  • Application servers on Windows and Linux
  • Virtualisation platforms (VMware, Proxmox)
  • Client configurations (profiles, data storage, roaming)
  • Systems for software distribution (SCCM)
  • Hybrid environments (on-premise connected with Azure)

When designing, the following factors are considered:

  • Disaster recovery and high availability
  • Network topology and bandwidth
  • Data center capacities
  • Costs, licenses, and lifecycle management
  • Current and future functionalities
  • Available resources (budget, personnel, infrastructure)
  • CMDB management

The goal is to realize a stable, coherent, and future-oriented infrastructure that meets the needs of the organization.

Responsibilities

1. Design

  • Developing a high-level server and infrastructure design tailored to user volume, network capacity, requirements, licenses, and additional needs.
  • Documenting the design and proposing improvements and optimizations.
  • Evaluating and updating the design when technology or context evolves.

2. Implementation

  • Overseeing the correct execution of implementations in both test and production environments.
  • Checking whether systems function optimally according to the defined design requirements.
  • Proactively analyzing parameters, logs, and other signals to detect deviations in a timely manner.

3. Monitoring & Troubleshooting

  • Analyzing logging, SCOM notifications, and other monitoring sources.
  • Investigating issues and taking corrective actions, including adjusting configurations if necessary.
  • Collaborating with external parties during environment scans or audits.

4. Maintenance

  • Periodically evaluating whether updates or revisions to the design are necessary to keep the infrastructure modern, stable, and secure.

5. Documentation

  • Using the organization's standard documentation tools and processes.

6. Advice & Strategy

  • Advising on technical specifications and procurement files.
  • Creating and maintaining tactical roadmaps for the short and long term.
  • Defining projects that optimize the IT infrastructure.
  • Conducting in-depth analyses of the existing architecture to prepare it for future evolutions, including security assessments and external connections.

Special attention is given to expertise in:

  • NetApp storage
  • Tools used in the laboratories, such as Evisense/Trescal
  • Trustwave Secure Gateway (email security)

At least 5 years of experience with these three environments is required. Security practices are built according to Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA).
