Power BI Architect

In recent years, the FASFC has been striving to become a fully data-driven organization and relies on a central data warehouse for its reporting and analysis.

Given the rapidly evolving technologies and business needs, the FASFC now wants to modernize this platform by migrating it to the Microsoft Azure cloud. This transition involves the implementation of new, powerful tools, including Microsoft Fabric (ETL) and Power BI.

To help us with this challenge, we are looking for a Power BI Architect profile.

Mission:

  • Designing the Power BI architecture (workspaces, shared datasets, management) in the Azure Cloud.
  • Implementing and configuring the Power BI platform (workspaces, licenses, gateways, capacity management) in line with the data warehouse platform in the Azure Cloud and integrating the required Azure services.
  • Implementing security in accordance with the organization’s governance framework and data classification as defined in the metadata management tool: Row-Level Security, access to datasets and reports, Azure AD authentication, securing sensitive and confidential data.
  • Setting up monitoring, including statistics such as execution time, dataset usage/users/reports, etc.
  • Implementing multilingualism, publishing, version management, and the lifecycle of reports.
  • Defining and establishing standards for dataset modeling and DAX development with the goal of optimization.
  • Ensuring optimal performance, integrity, stability, scalability, and cost savings of reports and datasets.
  • Integrating the existing metadata management tool into the new architecture.
  • Defining and establishing technical standards: naming, security, governance, monitoring, and CI/CD.
  • In collaboration with the MS Fabric architect, ensuring a complete data warehouse and reporting platform, so that Power BI models can be aligned with the Kimball/Snowflake star schemas of the data warehouse.
  • In collaboration with the FASFC teams (ICT, Strategic Unit, CISO, DPO), ensuring the consistency of the platform.
  • Documenting the architecture and training the ICT teams (BI, CCOE (Cloud Center of Excellence), solution architects).

Expected results:

  • Power BI and the required reporting services are implemented, configured, and fully integrated with the data warehouse platform in the Azure Cloud, using MS Fabric as ETL tool.
  • The Power BI architecture (workspaces, shared datasets, etc.) is fully set up and secured in accordance with the data governance and classification (security and confidentiality) that have been introduced in the DataGalaxy metadata management tool. DataGalaxy is fully integrated with the Power BI architecture.
  • This new platform is stable, performs excellently, is integrated, and enables scalability and cost optimization for reporting and datasets.
  • Monitoring, including all useful statistics (see previous section), as well as multilingualism, publishing, version management, and the lifecycle of reports, is operational.
  • Technical standards and modeling of datasets, as well as DAX development enabling performance optimization, have been established and are aligned with the Kimball/snowflake star schemas of the data warehouse.
  • The architecture is documented and explained to the ICT teams (BI, CCOE, Solutions Architect).

Technical skills:

  • Power BI Desktop & Service (datasets, reports, dashboards).
  • Demonstrable expertise in Azure Data Services.
  • Tabular modeling and dataset optimization in the cloud.
  • Demonstrable experience in setting up a Power BI cloud reporting platform based on an Azure data warehouse fed by MS Fabric feeds.
  • Experience in implementing publishing, security, and monitoring in Power BI.
  • Practical knowledge of data warehouse concepts (Kimball/Inmon/DataVault modeling) and data management.
  • Practical knowledge of multilingualism and publishing in Power BI.
  • Advanced DAX, Power Query, and SQL.
  • Security and row-level management of Power BI and data in Azure.
  • Power BI integration with Microsoft Fabric/Azure and other data sources.
  • CI/CD for Power BI (Azure DevOps or GitHub).
  • Knowledge of Sparx Enterprise Architect for documentation is a plus.
  • Knowledge of SAP BI is a plus.

Requested profile:

  • Master’s degree in computer science or equivalent experience.
  • At least 7 years of experience with Power BI in the Azure Cloud (installation, configuration, implementation, modeling) in a professional environment.
  • Excellent communication and teaching skills.
  • Strategic vision and focus on optimization.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • French/Dutch with a good passive knowledge of the other language (required).

The position can be performed either full-time or part-time. This assignment covers 30 man-days.
