The Federal Police is developing a strategic vision regarding artificial intelligence, with a focus on its responsible use. The AI strategy clarifies how the organization intends to structure itself in this area.

The Federal Police encourages innovation, and therefore the development, testing, and use of AI systems. However, due to, on the one hand, potential risks and, on the other hand, legal and regulatory requirements arising in particular from the AI Act, specific processes must be strictly followed.

The Federal Police's AI-Lab is a controlled and secure experimental environment in which AI applications can be developed, tested, and validated before potentially being deployed within the organization. It provides a controlled environment to explore new applications, accumulate experience, manage risks, and integrate governance, security, and compliance from the outset.

The ultimate goal is to provide the Federal Police with safe, legal, and ethical access to AI in order to support staff in operational and support tasks.

At the heart of the digital transformation of the Products Division, the Senior AI Architect designs and leads software architectures integrating artificial intelligence — from generative AI to production ML models. This hybrid role combines strategic vision, technical mastery, and team leadership to deliver robust, scalable, and high-impact AI solutions for the business.

Main Responsibilities

As a Senior AI Architect:

• You are the technical reference for the Division in defining, designing, and evolving artificial intelligence architectures. You play a strategic role in the organization's digital transformation.
• You work closely with various stakeholders to transform operational needs into robust and sustainable technical solutions.
• You design reference architectures for artificial intelligence solutions, ensuring their seamless integration into the existing IT ecosystem and compliance with requirements in terms of security, governance, compliance, performance, and maintainability.
• You actively participate in the design, implementation, and evolution of the Division's AI-Lab, which will serve as the reference platform for the development, experimentation, and operation of artificial intelligence solutions.
• You define the technical architectures enabling the use of technologies such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Large Language Models (LLM), generative AI, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), AI Agents, Computer Vision, Speech AI, as well as future emerging technologies.
• You provide your expertise on cloud, hybrid, and on-premise architectures, data platforms, MLOps pipelines, API-oriented architectures, event-driven architectures, containerized environments, as well as orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes.
• You ensure best practices regarding AI Engineering, MLOps, DevSecOps, as well as AI Governance. In particular, you ensure the integration of cybersecurity, data protection, traceability, auditability, model risk management, and regulatory compliance requirements into all proposed architectures.
• You collaborate with project managers to assess the technical feasibility of new initiatives, identify risks, and ensure the consistency of developed solutions with the organization's overall IT strategy.
• You maintain a constant technological watch on developments in the artificial intelligence market and evaluate new technologies likely to bring real added value to the organization.

Profile Sought

• Minimum 5 years of experience in the design and development of software solutions, including at least 2 years of experience in architecture of artificial intelligence or Machine Learning solutions.
• Master's degree or equivalent in computer science, artificial intelligence, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience demonstrating a comparable level of expertise. Profiles from non-traditional backgrounds (career changers, self-taught, open source) are welcome if you can demonstrate your impact.
• Proven experience in the design, industrialization, and deployment of AI solutions in a production environment, from needs analysis to operational use.
• Solid knowledge of modern AI technologies, including Large Language Models (LLM), generative AI, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), AI Agents, as well as the principles of AI Engineering and MLOps.
• Experience in defining cloud or hybrid architectures, ideally within the Microsoft Azure ecosystem, as well as in integrating AI solutions within complex IT environments.
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment and to support technical teams in architectural choices and best practices.

Work location: Boulevard du Jardin Botanique 50, 1000 Brussels

Working conditions: Presence at the office at least 2 times per week depending on tasks and in agreement with the team, remote work allowed from home or at the employer’s premises (in Belgium)
